IBM: Patent Award Winning Gifs (2017)
Client: Ogilvy & Mather
Post-Production: Polyester Studios (animation)
Statistics:
In 2017, IBM led in U.S. patents with 9,043, marking their 25th consecutive year at the top. This achievement also represented a milestone of over 100,000 patents for the company since 1993. The patents covered areas like Artificial Intelligence, Cloud, Blockchain, Cybersecurity and Quantum Computing
My Involvement:
As an agency video producer who loves design and animation, I was requested to produce celebratory gifs for the IBM client. It was a big year for the tech company and they wanted to partner with an innovative animation studio so I contacted peers and connected the agency to Polyester. From there, I produced the timeline, budget and review cycle between the agency and the client. Creative excitement and an attention to detail were key to the success of this production given the need to interpret complex patents into simplified gifs. Check out the gifs below and learn more!
Mitigating security risks - IBM Patent 9560075 | To combat data breaches, IBM researchers created an AI system that detects and deters would-be hackers by luring them down into dead-ends. Patent 9560075 proactively baits hackers into messaging and email exchanges, leading them to needlessly spend valuable time and resources on nonexistent leads. The system can potentially reduce security risks associated with “phishing” and other malicious activity.
Simplifying transactions with blockchain - IBM Patent 9824031 | Businesses conduct a variety of transactions, such as selling products, paying vendors, and trading stocks. But whatever the transaction, when different parties are doing business together, it can get complicated. If companies don’t have a trusted relationship in place they require a third-party clearing house to execute transactions. Patent 9824031 uses Blockchain technology to help make every single transaction as smooth and secure as possible. Rather than use a third-party clearing house, companies can act as an intermediary to facilitate the transaction efficiently and securely. Blockchain is enabling transactions that are immutable and transparent. This is just one of the record-breaking 9,000+ patents IBM received in 2017.
Predictive cloud scaling - IBM Patent 9755923 | With all kinds of businesses moving their operations to the cloud, making sure customers’ cloud experiences are always positive is more important than ever. IBM researchers created a system that can ensure the cloud always provides the right resources at the right time to help meet demand. Patent 9755923 uses unstructured data from various sources, like newsfeeds, weather reports and social media, to automatically predict how and when cloud resources should be allocated.
Controlling self-driving cars - US Patent 9566986 | When it comes to self-driving cars, the question of who has control—and when—is key. If an unexpected hazard appears, patent 9566986 could help the vehicle sense whether to continue driving autonomously or to hand manual control over to the driver. IBM scientists developed an AI-powered system that could help evaluate the safety of various driving conditions––poor visibility, obstructed road, faulty brakes, etc.––and quickly decide if it’s safer for the driver to take over.
